Creative Gatherings
Each location hosted a gathering day where participants shared their findings through exhibitions, discussions, drawing sessions, and sound exercises. These gatherings blended research with creative expression, emphasizing storytelling, memory, and community knowledge exchange.

Activities
Community-based participatory research (CBPR)
In each region, participants recorded the natural sounds of environments where traditional plants grow. These soundscapes were later used creatively—participants listened and translated what they heard into drawings, offering a new sensory perspective on Rwanda’s botanical heritage.

Sound Mapping
Participants and project leads identified and collected traditional plants, visited cultivation sites, and interviewed local farmers and healers. Each location uncovered unique botanical knowledge, highlighting the everyday and spiritual uses of these plants in Rwandan communities.

One Room 4 Archives (OR4A) is a collaborative project led by Milele Museum in partnership with Savvy Contemporary, focused on documenting and reimagining Rwanda’s botanical heritage through a mix of community research, creative workshops, and digital tools. Over the course of several weeks, the project brought together students, traditional knowledge holders, and artists in four regions of Rwanda—Huye, Burera, Nyundo, and Kigali—to explore how plants have been used for healing, food, rituals, and daily life.

Development of a Digital Archive
The outcomes of this project are being compiled into a participatory online library. This living archive ensures that the knowledge collected remains accessible, dynamic, and community-driven. Stay tuned on this page for updates!
